Whisky Of The Week: Lagavulin 16 Year Old

This week we present the Lagavulin 16 year Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

A big favourite here at Monsieur & Moi and one we would certainly recommend. Being from Islay, there is quite a large peat and smoky flavour, so we must suggest starting off with something for subtle.

Lagavulin dates back to 1816 , making it one of Scotland’s oldest distillery sties. Originally, there were two different distilleries on the one parcel of land at Port Ellen on Islay. After one of the owners died, both distilleries were consolidated and became the Lagavulin distillery. Another cool fact is that the Lagavulin has the slowest distillery of any Islay single malt.

The first thing you notice as you pour a glass is the beautiful golden, honey-like colour of the Whisky. In the mouth, you are first hit with a strong peat and smoky flavour, as well as woody and charcoal flavours. What I love, is you are then met by some sweet chocolate, chili and toffee flavours which contrasts against the power of the long-lasting peat magnificently.

Certainly a single malt we would highly recommend you sample or buy as an addition to your collection! A bottle of Lag will set you back around $100 (AUD) and you can get it here.
